Randy Glass: Stippling God

I've always loved those little meticulously drawn heads in Wall Street Journal articles. In fact, I've often considered high stakes white-collar crime just to increase my chances of receiving a free WSJ mini-stipple potrait. I think the jail time may be worth it for jail is temporary while a framed WSJ stipple is forever! So I stippled stumbled upon the site for Randy Glass. He is the genius behind all those little WSJ heads and he has about 100 of them up on his site for your perusal. Check it out.

His other art mediums are equally as impressive. Spend some time with Randy Glass.

WSJ loves this illustration format because they are done in an engraving style that looks like the filthy lucre, mazuma, doh-re-me, that WSJ bangs the drum endlessly for...

I wonder if the artist works from photos or the occasional live subject? But they are tasty

Seems to me they are mos def done from photos. I recognised a few of the iconic poses from famous celeb press photographs & move stills... and I doubt any of these "stars" would sit for endless hours as this dude made little dots on a page like a woodpecker tapping out morse code. "Hold still, I'm almost done with your left eyelashes, Mrs. Benning"

P.S. It also seems somewhat of a dying art because I'm certain I have some effects on Photoshop that would allow me to stipple a photograph. Maybe we've uncovered his secret? Charging WSJ god knows how much for these drawings when all he's doing is running it through Photoshop.

Hi..interesting to see your work...you could check out nolinovak.com who also works with WSJ. I am a Hyperpointillist (please take time to check my blog and see what I mean)..I've not yet met anyone who works exclusively in my style...so it's good to see the work of others!!

Hey, checked out your blog, your stuff is amazing. I will post a link on mine soon.

Your stuff reminded me of George Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte. I love it.

Also, just so you know, thats not MY art its the art of Randy Glass, I was just worshipping :)

Thanks for saying such nice things about my drawings on your website, GCI...means a lot to me.
I actually spend most of my time working on other illustration projects, so I limit my WSJournal hedcuts to once-a-week- alongside Joe Morgenstern's film reviews. And- no matter who I'm drawing- it's definitely the brightest spot in my weekly schedule!
They're all done by hand- w/ a 6X0 Rotring rapidograph...frankly- I'm not computer-savvy enough to create these in Photoshop. Maybe someday...
Again- I sure appreciate your comments, and all the attention your site has brought to mine.

And - I have a brand-new website / online portfolio...check it out (same URL) www.RandyGlassStudio.com.
Several new illustrations added this go-round plus plenty of additional WSJ hedcuts.
Thanks GCI!
